Quote of the Day (05/06/08)

Thursday 5 June 2008 | quote of the day

“I write down everything I want to remember. That way, instead of spending a lot of time trying to remember what it is I wrote down, I spend the time looking for the paper I wrote it down on.”
Beryl Pfizer

This is a fairly accurate summation of my current working methods! It’s not so bad in terms of ‘real’ work as almost everything is duplicated in a file somewhere on my laptop or the network, or else it’s in a particular hardback notebook that I’m very careful with.

But I have bits of novel(s) and novel-planning everywhere at home – in multiple DOC and RTF files, on bits of paper, in random notebooks. I’m aiming to pull everything together into PageFour, a piece of creative writing software that I’ve been using for some months now. But guess what? I’m not that organised. Yet.

Everything on my laptop is pretty organised, really.

That is, compared to the multitude of scraps, half-filled notebooks and drawers full of type-written pages that I threw out today when cleaning my room. I would say it took a small forest to produce that amount of rubbish. Sigh…

I have two notebooks in my work bag half full of “this and that” in hopes of scribbling becoming blog posts. Sometimes I have no idea what the thoughts behind the phrase meant, but sometimes when I go digging for a post, I find a real gem. Makes it all worth while.

I’ve tried that: I end up with lists of lists – and still lose track of them eventually… which saves me the task of culling.

Oh yes! That’s me, too! Recently, I’ve started only writing stuff down in a notebook. I’ve trained myself to almost always have the notebooks with me. It’s helping… a little. Everything is all mashed up in there… things I have to do, things I want to remember, ideas for this or that… but at least it’s all in one place now. It’s a start. And it’s probably as good as it’s ever going to get for me! LOL

Sadly, that’s how my entire life is organized. And I use that word loosely. I (and now my daughters) am always tucking some item or another away in a ‘safe’ place only to never find it when I need it!

Fiendish! How can you possibly throw out written things? They might come in useful someday…
(That attitude might explain the boxes of paper that I never seem to get rid of, and which have moved houses with me a couple of times…)

Actually, I admire people who can throw things away and those who manage to write down their ideas (you can see from my posts about dreams that I generally forget most of mine).

I do have a couple of notebooks (one has wedding plans, the other generally fictional scribbled) – I just need to start carrying them around for when ideas hit me.
